Backpacks will help you pack a fairly large number of items in them and thus free up space in your inventory. Anyway, extra space will never hurt, especially in the later stages of the game.
After crafting your own backpack, you can perfectly upgrade it and get a more spacious backpack. There can be really a lot of slots to the point that you can fit a huge amount of things into your new backpack. If you wish, you can create several bags in which you can put even more items, just have them in your inventory and use them at the right time.
